The Gas Guage is a Bit Wonky...
The needle moves around somewhat randomly. I had no idea how much gas I had or how her mileage was. Pretty exciting! I chose this as the first repair because I thought it would be simple and it was a chance to work on a Lucas electrical system again!
Q: Why do the English drink warm beer?
A: Because Lucas makes their refrigerators!
Actually, Lucas is not that bad as a company. A friend's father spent his whole career working for them so I know the company as more than a customer.
I started by looking for loose connections.
There are a surprising number of wires for such a simple system. Eventually I removed the gauge and cleaned the contacts. I even glued the paper washer back together!
I insist on using my Swiss Army knife at least once on any project. It was a Father's Day present from my kids so it makes me feel like they are helping me!
Eventually I got it back together but no luck. I assumed the float was OK because she has a new gas tank although I also cleaned and tightened those connections.
Next step was to check the voltage stabilizer. The hardest part of that exercise was finding it! It's on the firewall behind the gauges.
I put my DC power supply into the circuit and all looked normal.
