First oil change and tune up

It's finally time to get under the hood!  This reminds of an experience with my Dad's '74 MG.  We were putting the engine back in after some work and my best friend, Sean, was cranking it over.  I was the quickly reminded that the oil pressure gage is actually fed with pressurized oil in the dash through a copper tube which I had forgotten to connect!  This wisdom washed over me in an instant as the gout of oil hit me full in the face!  This job was easier!  I did, however, experience some challenges finding a filter:

This car originally had a renewable paper filter element and was converted to a cartridge filter at some point.  It also has the world's largest starter motor (power density having improved dramatically over the last 50 years!).  The filter has to go above the starter.  The one that came off is in the ziplock bag.  You can see the two unsuccessful attempts next and finally the winner: a $13 Napa filter which is also used for lawn mowers!

I also changed the plugs.  The Bosch Platinums seemed to be running hot.  I am curious as to the dark pattern on the old threads that goes farther up each plug as you approach the front of the engine.  Hmmmm...
