Safety

I have mixed feelings about safety.  On one hand, we are living in, by far, the safest time in human history.  This has been managed by ever increasing attention to what are now, very small dangers.  For example, you are 75x more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark.  While nuclear energy seems very scary, it kills less than 1 person per year in the US while coal fired energy kills 300.  That's before factoring in the damage to our lungs from particulates.  And, while windmills might look nice, they are already killing about 5 people per year at only 2% of our energy mix.  As humans, we use our imagination to avoid danger but it's not keeping up with our use of imagination to improve things.

However, my imagination contains a remarkably clear image of my head impacting BB's steering wheel during even a minor crash.  This vision includes everything from lost teeth to paralysis.  Fortunately, my daughter bought me three-point seat belts for Christmas!

This was a very easy installation.  I understood that a '68 would not have the shoulder restraint mounting point, but it was there!  It did need to have the threads chased, however...
Perhaps they were anticipating Ralph Nader!  In any case, my confidence is much improved.  There is even a chance that my children may ride with me at this new safety level!
Happy motoring!

  1. I did new carpet in my B last week and, for the first time, noticed those threaded holes. Now I know why they are there.
