Why Fuel Injection Replaced the Carburetor

I'm in the business of innovation and one of the key questions is "What causes some new ideas to be adopted and some to fail?".  One automotive example that I always wondered about is fuel injection.  Fuel injection replaced the carburetor even though it is more expensive and doesn't really offer any side benefits.  Normally, one has to save the customer money or let him or her do something new to launch a new product.  But, when BB got to the point of not starting below 40F, I realized that the added value of fuel injection is reliability!  And then started on a carburetor rebuild.

Like many MG's, BB's carburetorhas been upgraded to a Weber.  The original carbs were side-draft Stromberg Unions which are an elegant engineering marvel but a little difficult to keep in tune.  The Weber was pretty easy to remove and the rebuild kit was only $35.

Inside is showing an impressive dirt collection.
Including some kind of strange jelly in the bottom of the float bowl.

Now that's a lot of little parts
Setting the height on the float was pretty straightforward.

And after that upgrade of old, brittle rubber parts, BB starts at all temperatures!  Even though, to be honest, I have not yet remembered all the nuances of operating a manual choke!

  1. Every time I read about rebuilding or adjusting a carburetor (or syncing dual carbs) I give a salute to my fuel injected motorcycle!

  2. Man that carb is corroded, where is that car from? What suspension system is that from? I hear that wire wheels are not recommended for the track as they are not stiff enough, I never thought of that.
Nice job, I had a neighbor who told me he couldn't crawl under his car anymore because it made him claustrophobic, I found the same thing after pulling my engine and transmission to swap out the clutch 28 hours.
I do not recommend the heavy duty clutch unless you have very good knees, my left knee thanks me every gear change now that I have the standard clutch.
Auto cross will be fun, but if you go to the track I think you will be disappointed with the lack of horsepower, I know I was. So instead of putting in a V8, I bought a Porche boxster, havent been to the track yet but it doesn't ride as well as the MGB, way to stiff, maybe I can get some adjustable shocks.
I had a ride in a Miata, feels just like the MGB but with out all the rattles. I would get a Miata and try to put an MGB dash in, because Ispend a lot of time looking at it and MGB dashes are great.

    1. That's an aftermarket Weber carb that came with the car. This Winter I am putting in an RX-8 engine so these problems will be gone to be replaced by others! I agree about the dash! I love looking at those gauges!
