Welcome to Fuel Injection!

I feel guilty.  I wrote a post some months ago, sort of making fun of carburetors.  Kind of implying that fuel injection was superior.  Well, sure!  Once you buy the $100 pump and the $120 pressure regulator, I bet it's awesome!  Did I forget to mention the $150 worth of high-pressure, braided steel hose and fittings that are required?

Of course, these costs are only encountered by the home mechanic.  One of the remarkable characteristics of manufacturing automobiles is producing complex parts in high volumes.  I wish I had been observant enough to have made that statement, but it actually came from Bill Ford, chairman of Ford on 60 Minutes, during this depressing pandemic while Ford (and GM) were manufacturing ventilators.  Those proved to not be needed at the time.  That seems like forever ago but it was only about eight months.  My own company, under my leadership, explored supplying parts and even our own manufacturing.  Sadly, our equipment was not well suited.  We then had a big sigh of relief when the ICU's were not overwhelmed in our areas.  Now, however, Covid has a Christmas surge in store for us.  I hope those units are still available.

To return to the subject of fuel injection, I don't have the high volume advantage!  I am therefore paying through the nose for fittings of every type.  Most are SAE standards and, since I'm president this year, you'd think I'd get a discount.  Sadly, I get to make an extra donation!  Anyway, if I had to machine all this by hand I'd be in 2022 before BB springs to life again!  So, I appreciate standards!

This looks pretty handsome, after many hours of trial fitting and relocating!

In any case, it delivers 65psi of fuel pressure and no gasoline runs out onto the floor!

I hope that will soon turn into horsepower!  But this work is very enjoyable in the meantime!  Happy driving and keep having #funwithcars!
